  Mesotherapy was pioneered by Dr. Michael Pistor in 1952. It has been used in the treatment of acne, arthritis and joint problems, sports injuries, as well as for cosmetic purposes; such as reducing wrinkles, cellulite and weight loss. It is the practice of injecting natural substances including vitamins, homeopathic medicine, herbs, enzymes, hormones, anaesthetics, anti-inflammatory herbs, phosphatydlcholine, hyluronic acid and other biologics etc. into the mesoderm or middle layer of the skin. Each treatment is individualized after a complete assessment. While each mesotherapy treatment may involve many small injections, the treatment typically only takes minutes to complete.

  Microinjections are given once or twice a week, once every two weeks or once a month (typical for osteoporosis treatments). Variations occur depending on the condition and response to treatment. The treatments generally take 2-10 weeks. The needles used are 4mm long and are sterile and disposable with a penetration of 2-3mm. The treatments are almost painless because extremely small needles are used and penetrate the body only to a very small depth. When the desired effect is achieved, yearly maintenance is recommended.

  The number of mesotherapy treatments needed depends on a number of factors: the severity of the condition, the cause of the problem, response to treatment, the area to be treated, age of client and how long the problem has been there. In general acute problems only require 1-2 sessions where chronic problems take 4-10 sessions. Cost also varies depending on what is used in the mesotherapy treatment. This is fully explained during the initial appointment and assessment before treatment begins.

  The mesoderm is defined as the middle embryonic germ layer, lying between the ectoderm and endoderm. The mesoderm forms all of the connective tissues throughout the body and includes the skin, bone, muscle, tendons, circulatory and urogenital system, spinal cord and fatty tissues that surround the organs. By stimulating the mesoderm layer we directly treat the whole body.

 In most European countries mesotherapy is used primarily for therapeutic application because it works so well for pain and restructuring collagen. However in North America it has become popular most for its cosmetic purposes, cellulite, dissolving fat and wrinkle reduction.

 Mesotherapy is used successfully in therapeutic and cosmetic applications with improved results in 80-90% of patients. Results can be further enhanced with a complete naturopathic program, microdermal abrasion, ultrasound, Bowen therapy and deep penetrating massage.

  Mesotherapy is effective for a multitude of conditions because it helps to reverse the physiology of the condition. In rheumatoid arthritis, for example, plant and homotoxicology agents are used to control inflammation, whereas connective tissue stimulators such as silica, enzymes and GAGS that promote healing would be given to an athlete with a sports injury. For healing to take place there are four stages of treatment: 1) there must be breakdown of fibrous tissue (scar tissue) or fat, 2) drainage of inflammatory by products, toxins, fat or stimulation of circulation, 3) improved muscle tone, elastin and collagen stimulation for firmness and structure, and 4) restoration of lymph and circulation to maintain healthy flow of toxins, nutrition and maintenance of the synovial fluid for long –term results. All mesotherapy treatments follow this protocol so contents of the injections vary with each session.

  Mesotherapy is used for inflammation, poor circulation, reduction of calcification, fibroblast or collagen/elastin stimulation, lymph congestion, muscle relaxation, to break down fat nodules, stimulation of enzymes, immune enhancement, bone building, hormonal balancing, nutritional correction, vasodilation and pain relief. This allows a wide range of application. The additional benefit is that it is given locally to reduce side-effects and improve results. It is also a beneficial treatment for the whole body because the mesoderm layer is stimulated during treatment.

 Mesotherapy injections should be done in conjunction with a comprehensive natural medicine program designed to improve overall metabolism. This would have the effect of increasing weight loss and/or improving overall results. Hormonal imbalances are often at the core of the problem and need to be corrected to have maximum benefits. If the underlying physiology is corrected and maintained with healthy dietary choices and exercise mesotherapy will have long lasting results. For example skin factors such as dehydration, excessive sun exposure, genetics, age, muscle atrophy, fatty acid deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, stress, and nutritional deficiencies all impact long term results for wrinkle reduction.
